When I was seven years old, my mom was diagnosed（诊断）with cancer. The doctors told us my mom might be saved with operation. But it could also kill her. She chose to have it. The day before the operation I was off school, and my mom planned the best day of my life, everything I loved at seven and everything that would put a smile on my face. The day began with her waking me up saying, ―Kate, I have a surprise for you. Come and see.‖ The surprise was a doll I had wanted for the longest time. Throughout the day, she told me everything that she thought I would need to know to grow up and be a good person; she told me to be the best I could be and that I would always make her proud. We had a picnic in the park, and it was so cold that we moved to the car. The day was filled with laughter. For the first time in a long time I could see she was really happy. I would never forget her smile, or the way her eyes shone as if we were the same age. It was the best day of my life, and I will never forget the conversations we shared. My mother managed to live through the operation. Now when I look back, I realize that the best day of my life could be her last and this could be the last day I would remember with her, the last one we shared. I also understand how unselfish a mother is. 48. Who decided to have the operation? A. The doctors. B. Kate‘s mother. C. Kate. D. Kate‘s family. 49. What was the surprise to Kate? A. Many companies use guards and expensive alarm systems to protect their property（财产）. Soon a new kind of protection will be used—robots. Engineers have been working on the first mobile robots for businesses. The robots will guard factories, warehouses（仓库）and museums at night. The mobile robots will move around slowly on wheels. They will be able to detect（察觉，发现） people through walls and pick up sounds, such as breaking glass. They can be fixed with loud sirens to frighten thieves, or radios to
signal police or guards. To protect a building, a robot will have to move around without knocking into the walls. Information about the building will have to be stored in the robot‘s small, built-in computer. A floor map could be programmed into the computer‘s memory, for example. A mobile robot will not be able to do everything. Unlike human guards, it will not be able to climb stairs, open doors, or move along rough ground. It won‘t be able to tell the difference between friends and enemies. Because of that, people will have to be prevented from entering the area it moves.
U.S. companies pay almost $10 billion a year to protect their property with alarm systems and human guards. Mobile robots may be cheaper. 51. Why is the new kind of robots called mobile robots? Because they can _______________. A. guard factories, warehouses and museums C. sense moving objects and signal police A. From a human guard. C. From another robot. 53. What can be the best title of this passage? A. New Guards. C. Alarm Systems. B. Science and Technology. D. Engineers and Robots. B. send loud, painful sirens when it is stolen D. move around and do the programmed work B. From a built-in computer. D. From radio signals.
52. How will a robot get directions for moving around a building?
Teachers and parents usually call attention to the pictures when they read storybooks to preschool children. But a new study tells that calling attention to the words and letters on the book may lead to better readers. The two-year study compared （比较） children who were read to this way in class with children who were not. Those whose teachers most often discussed the words showed clearly higher skills in reading, spelling and understanding. Shayne Piasta, a professor of teaching and learning at Ohio State University, says most preschool teachers would need only a small change in the way they teach. They already read storybooks in class. The only difference would be increased attention to the printed words. Ms. Piasta says if you get children to pay attention to letters and words, it makes sense that they will do better at word spelling. But she says studies show that very few parents and teachers do this in a systematic（系统的）way. They watched more than three hundred children aged four and five in classrooms in Ohio and Virginia. The children came from poor families and were poor in their language skills. They may become bad readers when they enter primary schools later. Professor Justice says children‘s language skills can be improved by discussing with him or her when you are reading a book to a child. There are different ways that adults can talk to children about the letters and words on the page. They can point to a word and discuss the shape of it with a finger. They can point out a word: ―This is ?dog‘.‖ They can discuss the meaning of the word or how the words tell the story. And they can also show how words are written left to
right in English. 54. What does the underlined phrase ―it makes sense‖ in Paragraph 4 mean? A. It can be understood and agreed. C. It can be difficult to imagine and describe. 55. What can we infer from the passage? A. Parents are more important than teachers for little children. B. Teachers need to learn a lot to use the new teaching way. C. It‘s impossible for preschool children to understand words. D. Skills are important to children‘s reading development. 56. The writer wants to tell us that _________. 8. I‘m Ms Sun Ying Jian, a Chinese language teacher at Pat‘s Schoolhouse. I come from Jilin province in China. I moved to Singapore 12 years ago. I teach children aged two to six. I think the best way to teach young children is to make them interested in something, and let them work on their own. Today young parents are taking care of their children‘s every need. Letting children do things themselves will help them in their school learning. During my classes, I tell the children to learn Chinese words on their own. They are good at it. Some children practice writing it while others try to read it. Parents have their own ways, but those may not always be good for their children. The best way is usually when children find out their own way to do things. When children do something wrong, I ask them to try another way. Playtime is also important for children, as it is when they can learn best. It may just be sand in a playground to us, but children can do a lot of things when they are given some tools. 9.
