C Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun ( 修女 ) who earned international attention and won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with orphans and the poor around the world. During her lifetime, she was
responsible for touching the lives of thousands of poor people, often working in tough conditions in Third World countries, especially India. Born on August 26, 1910, she received her calling to ministry around the age of 12. She eventually left Macedonia and headed for India at the age of 18, after some training in Dublin, Ireland. She took her vows (誓言) as a nun on May 24, 1931. It was in India that Mother Teresa found her life’s work, spending most of her adult life in the city Calcutta. Although Mother Teresa would often travel to other countries to bring attention to various issues, India was her home base. She began her career as a teacher at St. Mary’s high school in Calcutta, but soon found that her mission was beyond the walls of school building. With hardly any money but a strong desire to help, she started as open-air school for India’s poorest children. One of Mother Teresa’s most lasting impacts is the result of her decision to start her own order known as the missionaries of charity(慈善）. This order has grown since the 1950s, and has individuals spread throughout the world with the mission(使命) of caring for those that no one else can or will care for. The awards Mother Teresa received were numerous. In 1971, she was awarded the pope John XXIII Peace Prize. That was followed in 1979 by the Norwegian Committee awarding her the Nobel Peace Prize, one of the most recognized awards in the world. Her death was mourned in both secular(不朽的) and religious communities. She was a rare and unique individual who lived long for higher purposes. Her lifelong devotion to the care of the poor, the sick, and the disadvantaged was one of the highest examples of service tour humanity. “She is the United Nations. She is peace in the world.” 29. Why did Mother Teresa start an open-air school for India’s poorest children? A. The local children wanted to study in the open air. B. The government wanted her to give a hand to the poor. C. She wanted to enlarge the school she once worked in. D. She had a very great aim and determined to achieve it. 30. The mission of the missionaries of charity is __________. A. to provide more jobs for the poor B. to take care of the unattended people C. to draw attention to various religious issues D. to spread Mother Teresa’s religious belief to the poor 31. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Mother Teresa was highly praised. B.Mother Teresa was a peaceful woman in India. C. Mother Teresa was a leader of the United Nations. D. Mother Teresa led a poor life in the United Nations. 32. What does the text mainly talk about? A. The awards Mother Teresa won. B.Mother Teresa and her childhood. C. Mother Teresa and her achievements.
D. The hardships Mother Teresa experienced. D Scientists recently found three kinds of animals living two smi les at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea (地中海). Their small bodies have many cells-each about the size of a large sand-but they are animals. The most exciting thing about these creatures, is that they don't seem to need oxygen to live. What biologists know about life so far is that only one-celled animals can live in spaces that have no oxygen, and those animals who have many cells can visit these places, but cannot live there. These newly-found creatures could change that idea. The animals live in a super-salty lake under the Mediterranean Sea. It may seem strange to think of a lake under the sea, but the water in the lake is so salty that it cannot mix with the seawater above it, and the water in the lake is even saltier than normal seawater. Ordinary seawater has oxygen in it-which allows animals like fish to live-but the water in the lake doesn't have oxygen. Finding animals down there is surprising. The scientists at first thought they were the bodies of dead animals floating into the lake from somewhere else. But later, they found "these dead bodies" appeared to be alive. Some of these animals had eggs, which suggests they were reproducing (繁殖); and their old skins suggest that they had lived there long enough to grow. But scientists still don't know how the animals live without oxygen. More studies are needed, and maybe biologists will need to rethink what they know about animals. 33. At the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, the scientists found _____. A. many one-celled animals B. some dead animals bodies C. three kinds of living animals D. animals that look like fish 34. What is special about the super-salty lake? A. The water in the lake has different colours. B. The water in the lake has much more oxygen. C. Animals with many cells began to live in the lake. D. The lake water doesn't mix up with the seawater above. 35. What can we infer from the text? A. One-celled animals may lay eggs to reproduce. B.More animals can be found in the super-salty lake. C. The lake under the Mediterranean attracts many visitors. D. The animals in the super-salty lake catch scientists' attention. 第 二节（共 5 小题；每小题 2 分，满分 10 分） 根据短文内容，从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。 I’ve been keeping an English blog for many years.
